About UW Certificate Programs

New program format meets changing student needs

To meet the changing needs of our students, University of Washington (UW) Extension introduces a new online + classroom combined format. This is a blended learning combination of lecture time both in the classroom and online to increase flexibility and accessibility. Designed for working professionals with demanding jobs and busy personal lives, or those who simply prefer to learn from home, the online + classroom combined format can reduce commuting time, help save on gas, and make it even more convenient to seek professional development and continuing education at UW.

"Most of our students are working professionals who are very interested in networking with their peers," said David Szatmary, vice provost, UW Educational Outreach. "They also appreciate the opportunity to network with the instructors, who are leading practitioners in the field as well as UW faculty. So the new format combining online learning and classroom time is ideal. It's convenient, it's a good sustainability measure because it saves gas, and still provides an important measure of face to face contact."

About UW Certificate Programs

UW Extension (a division of UW Educational Outreach) offers more than 120 certificate programs for adults seeking career advancement, career change, or personal enrichment. Areas of study include business, arts, healthcare, engineering, computing and IT. Most programs are a sequence of three or more linked noncredit or credit courses that build on each other, typically offered over six to nine months.

Courses are taught by noted industry professionals, community leaders, and UW faculty. Many are project based, with an emphasis on practical skills and real-life scenarios that students can apply immediately on the job. Because going back to school is a serious commitment for adult students with many claims on their time, UW certificate programs are designed with flexible schedules and a choice of part-time, full-time, or even online study, depending on the program.
