Registration opens for 2008 UW Summer Youth Programs

Make the most of summer for your kids by enrolling them in University of Washington (UW) Summer Youth Programs. Registration is open now for elementary, middle, and high school students at http://summeryouth.washington.edu.

Taught by experienced educators, these programs are as entertaining as they are educational - more than 800 kids took part in summer 2007. With the addition of new programs including In the Courthouse for middle school students and Introduction to Natural Science Illustration for high school students, offerings for summer 2008 promise to be just as engaging.

UW Summer Youth Programs are administered by UW Educational Outreach, the continuing and professional education division of UW that also administers UW in the High School, educational programs for K-12 teachers, and special events for children including UW World Languages Day (February 29) and UW Math Day (March 24).

For students entering grades 1-5

UW Summer Day Camp (grades 1-5) integrates art, science, drama and creative writing in three sessions, each with a different theme. Students also enjoy swimming and supervised outdoor activities. Is your child interested in "traveling" to the moon or Mars or maybe learning what it takes to become an astronaut?

To Space and Beyond: The Solar System runs from June 23 to July 11. Sail the Seven Seas (July 14-August 1) is for children who'd like to circumnavigate the world, exploring the major oceans and discovering the secrets of the sea. There's Gold in Them There Hills (August 4-15) recreates life during the Alaskan Gold Rush.

UW Summer Day Camp at the Arboretum will run for three week long sessions: June 23-27 (grades 1-3), July 7-11 (grades 1-3), and July 14-18 (grades 3-5). Throughout these one-week camps, children learn about plants, the ecology of the arboretum's wetlands and the importance of environmental stewardship.

The Mystery of the Sea: Marine Biology (July 21-August 1) incorporates special activities including visits to campus laboratories and Q&A sessions with UW scientists working in the field.

UW Middle School Short Courses offer one-week half and full day courses on a variety of topics. The Serious Fun of Toy Design (June 23-27) and The Serious Fun of Gears, Gadgets and Gizmos (July 14-18) are taught by a noted inventor who inspires budding inventors to create and build.

Other courses include the Middle School Young Writers Workshop (June 23-July 7) and In Courthouse (July 14-18), taught by a lawyer who leads students in mock trials and a fieldtrip to the King County Courthouse to watch a real trial in progress and meet with a judge.
