Half-day sessions, two weeks
Show off your creative side and share your work with others in this creative writing workshop especially designed for middle school students. Explore different literary genres in a supportive writing environment. This is not a remedial writing course. The creative efforts of the class will be captured in a literary booklet to bring home.

The Serious Fun of Toy Design

Join a master toymaker for a week of hands-on creativity, fun and invention geared especially towards middle school-age students. Use basic woodworking techniques to construct toys that flip, fly, float, balance and spin. Learn how successful toy inventors blend and modify classic "play patterns" to develop today's popular products, how to patent, pitch and package your ideas, and how to stay "fresh" with creativity-boosting exercises and challenges.

Crank up your imagination and join professional toy inventor Rick Hartman for a week of contraption-building, creativity, and FUN! You'll use gears, motors, battery packs and practical engineering know-how to build mechanical marvels that spark your imagination, tickle your funny bone, and bring out your inner inventor! No experience required...this course is "geared" towards new students and those who've previously enjoyed Rick's "Seriously Fun" classes!" In the Courthouse
5 sessions, one week
Be a lawyer for a week! Students will learn about who's at trials and how trials work. The class will take a fieldtrip to the King County Courthouse and watch part of a real trial and meet with a judge. Most importantly, students will get to play lawyer, witness or judge in our own mock trial based on a popular movie.

Instructor: Steve Brown is the creator and director of kidLAW®, an organization that provides young people with interactive programs about the law, and, in the process, teaches communication, leadership and literacy skills. His programs are creative, educational and fun -- and designed to be integrated into other experiences. Mock trials are usually based on books or movies. Prior to creating kidLAW®, Steve was a trial lawyer in Seattle. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981.
Instructor: Victoria Castaneda was born and raised in the South Sound region where she built up immunity to the "Tacoma Aroma." Victoria holds a bachelor's degree in English and History from Seattle University (where she earned an award for her poetry) and a master's degree in secondary education from Western Washington University. She has been teaching 7th and 10th grade Humanities at the International Community School in Kirkland since 2001. A National Writing Project Fellow since 2004, Victoria constantly seeks to challenge her own and her students' writing skills.
Instructor: Rick Hartman is an inventor and former teacher whose products have sold around the world. He's appeared on The Tonight Show, The Discovery Channel, and MTV and his workshops have been featured at museums around North America including the Smithsonian Institution and Science World BC.
