History of Jazz: Early Jazz
About the Recommended Materials
Mark C. Gridley's Jazz Styles: History and Analysis is one of the most acclaimed textbooks on jazz in recent years, and you will find that it is informative and helpful in teaching you not only about the history of jazz, but also about how to listen to the music. As Gridley writes in the preface, "No technical knowledge of music is required to understand the contents of this book," and he lives up to that statement by providing clear and comprehensible definitions of terms, outlining important aspects of jazz styles, pointing out the prominent characteristics of a musician's performing style, highlighting critical developments in the evolution of the music, and focusing on significant and historically important recordings with listening guides placed frequently throughout the text.
The supplementary reading appendix in the Gridley textbook and the suggested readings will enhance your musical knowledge. Gridley also provides a guide to record buying, a useful glossary of terms, and, for those with a musical background, an appendix chapter on jazz theory.
Compact Disc: Jazz Classics
Also available as a companion to the Gridley book, the Jazz Classics audio compact disc contains twenty-six historic jazz recordings that match several of the listening guides found in the textbook (at least one per chapter). It brings to life important examples of the music discussed in the textbook and provides you with significant listening experiences necessary to understand and appreciate jazz fully.
