EDC&I 505: Foundations of Instructional Leadership
Increase your understanding of how teachers learn and develop as professionals. Investigate theories of adult learning and effective professional development as they relate to the work of instructional leaders and coaches. (3 credits)
EDLPS 520: Education as a Moral Endeavor
Explore fundamental moral and ethical questions that educational leaders face. Foundational studies in history, philosophy, and sociology provide the basis for discussion and writing about these fundamental questions (3 credits)
EDC&I 599: Instructional Leadership Independent Study
Extend your understanding of the core concepts introduced in the courses above through a one-credit self-designed independent study and literature review. Students will work with program advisors and course instructors to design a small independent study to be completed by the end of the summer quarter (Term A). (1 credit)
Required Coursework
- EDC&I TBA: Action Research for Teacher Leaders
Explores the elements of research design important for answering teachers puzzling questions of practice. Learn more about critical reading of research, collaborative inquiry, asking good questions, designing and carrying out a study, organizing data and sharing results. The course will serve as a foundation for your culminating MIL project. (3 credits offered Winter Quarter, 2010). - Three-credit elective course in Teacher Development. Students will select from a menu of approved courses including (for example) EDC&I 524 (Seminar in Inservice Teacher Education); EDC&I 505 (Creating and Sustaining Professional Communities of Practice); or EDC&I (TBA) (Methods for Instructional Coaching). (3 credits)
- Three-credit elective in Multicultural Education. Students select a course (approved by program advisor) from among many offered by the College of Education that focus on multicultural approaches to equitable education for all students. (3 credits)

EDC&I 600: Culminating Project (and Reflective Seminar)
During the second year of their program (2010-2011), students will register for 6 credits of independent "thesis" or culminating project study. The reflective seminar will continue in the second year of the program as a support for project completion. The culminating project work will begin in the first year of the program (2009-2010) in the context of the action research course and the reflective seminar (3 credits).
