Commitment to Equity in Student Learning
Knowledge of ethical and moral leadership builds a foundation for leading your colleagues to close the achievement gap that divides students by race, class and language.
A Flexible, Cohort-Based Program
You'll get the best of both worlds in a program that combines ongoing connection to a cohort of other teacher leaders with the flexibility to build special expertise in one of five focus areas. With the support of your program co-advisors, you will identify a coordinated program of studies that meets your specialized leadership needs, participate in school-based experiences and develop a practice-based culminating project.
Comprehensive Curriculum
Guided by the expertise of faculty from the UW College of Education's Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Areas, the MIL program provides the core competencies in:
- Organizing and leading in schools/districts for equitable teaching and learning.
- Providing content-specific instructional support.
- Guiding the continuous growth of teachers.
- Implementing reflective group discussions and action inquiry.
Specialized Area of Focus
Participants gain instructional leadership knowledge and skills by selecting a focus area of study. Five areas of study include: literacy, mathematics, science, English language learners, and social studies.
Work-Compatible Format
The MIL program is designed with working teachers in mind. You will participate in an initial intensive four-week summer program along with your full cohort. During the academic year, you will return to campus for after-school courses and a continuing reflective seminar focused on your growing leadership and inquiry skills. A second year of summer school, along with after-school coursework and your culminating project will lead to completion of the degree program within two years.
