This degree is designed to prepare you for newly emerging non-supervisory positions in instructional leadership within your school or district. The complexity of teacher development and school change efforts ensure growing leadership opportunities for well-prepared individuals in non-administrative roles. You will develop a firm foundation in the necessary competencies for working with adult teacher/learners who serve an increasingly diverse student population.
Administrators are eager to identify and collaborate with teachers prepared to lead their peers "from the side." According to Washington state education leaders, qualified instructional coaches and mentors are especially needed for the state's drive to help every child learn and grow ("Washington Learns" report to Gov. Gregoire, November 2006).
Even if you already have a master's degree, our sources indicate that the additional 45 hours could entitle you to a salary increase. However, you should check with your district about your particular situation.
This degree is not intended for teachers who want to become certified school or district administrators. You should check with the University of Washington Danforth Educational Leadership Program or the University of Washington Leadership for Learning Program if you are interested in an administrative preparation program.
