| Description: |
This annual event sponsored by the UW Department of Mathematics is designed to show how mathematics can be an exciting, practical and rewarding field of study. Lectures on cutting-edge topics in the mathematical sciences are presented by faculty. Students choose from a variety of talks covering such topics as fractals, quasi-crystals, infinity and secret codes. Students may also attend a panel discussion addressing the various career opportunities open to people who have degrees in mathematics. There is a separate panel discussion for teachers. On-campus field trips are offered to the virtual reality (Human Interface Technology) lab, planetarium, Aeronautics and Astronautics wind tunnel, ram accelerator and water tunnel, Fisheries computer lab, Applied Physics labs and computer labs to give students hands-on experience with mathematical models. Early registration is suggested, since participation is limited. Please note that Math Day lectures are geared to students at the 10th- and 11th-grade level. Younger students who are capable of understanding more advanced mathematics are welcome. For complete details, request a brochure by calling (206) 897-8939. Math Day 2008 will take place on Monday, March 24. Fees are $14 per student/teacher plus a one-time $35 registration fee. |
