Who Should Participate?

The workshop is designed for teachers of intermediate grades.

About the Workshop

Participants use video-based materials to follow an instructional sequence over several lessons. Participants study the teacher's moves that support student learning, follow particular students as their understanding develops, analyze curricular design and choices, and see how teachers meet the needs of a diverse group of students. The math content will be fractions and ratios.

Participants will be able to: Hone their skills to become astute kid watchers, enabling them to maximize learning moments Investigate pedagogical strategies that support the development of learning communities, characterized by risk taking and genuine inquiry Construct their own landscape of learning, a long-term trajectory of models, strategies, and big ideas Deepen their understanding of the mathematics they teach and their ability to design mental math activities and mini-lessons for efficient and flexible computations

Young Mathematicians at Work provides multi-media environments that include video clips of lessons, samples of children's work, and interviews with teachers and children. The focus is on children's thinking, the big mathematical ideas they are constructing, and the various strategies and models they use in their investigations.

Cost

The workshop cost is $642 plus a $35 nonrefundable registration fee. The registration and refund deadline is July 11, 2008. A portion of tuition will go toward refreshments during the workshop.

Instructor

The instructor for Young Mathematicians at Work is Allison Hintz, doctoral student in mathematics education, experienced elementary school teacher, and teacher leader in Expanding a Community of Mathematics Learners project.

Credit/Audit Option

Participants earn three University of Washington credits upon satisfactory completion of the workshop. Those who do not require credit, but wish to earn clock hours, may audit the workshop. The cost is the same for clock hours or credits. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.

Housing

Participants in UW-sponsored summer programs may stay in the campus residence halls through the Visiting Personnel Program. In 2008, housing is available from June 22 through August 30. Reservations will be taken starting April 1.
