English Language Guidelines
Qualified international students may take UW courses and programs through UW Educational Outreach. All students taking these courses are expected to have adequate English language proficiency.

You should meet one or more of the following English language scores before you attempt to take any course except those English language courses designed for non-native speakers:


TOEFL: 500 (paper-based)
  172 (computer-based)
  45 (internet-based)
MELAB * : 72
SAT Verbal: 430
IELTS: 6.0
TOEIC: 650

* Michigan English Language Assessment Battery


Some certificate programs require different test scores. Please see the specific certificate program Web pages for language requirements for your program.

The University of Washington offers four levels of online academic English courses to help international students prepare for the English requirements of university-level courses. Please see the Online English Language Program for details.

Applicants for degree programs who are not US citizens must meet separate UW English language requirements for admission and graduation. For questions about English proficiency, please e-mail advisers@extn.washington.edu.
