I've been accepted into a certificate program, how do I register for my courses?
After being accepted into the certificate program, you will receive a registration form for the upcoming quarter by U.S. mail or e-mail. Complete the registration form and return it with the tuition payment and all applicable fees as soon as possible. You can also call our Registration Department at 206-543-2310.

You are enrolled in the course only when your registration form and fees have been received by UW Extension.

You will receive a registration confirmation form, called a transaction summary, after you register. This form serves as a receipt for payment and provides withdrawal and refund deadline dates. The registration confirmation should be retained in a safe place since it provides proof of enrollment in an UW Extension course and contains your UW Extension ID number, class schedule and room location.

When do I need to register for my courses?
Certificate students are responsible for registering and paying for all of the necessary courses in their program each quarter by the payment deadline. The payment due date is two weeks before the first day of class. Failure to register and pay by the payment deadline could result in the loss of your space in the course. For questions or concerns about the registration process, please contact Registration.

Payment can be made in person, by mail, or if using a credit card number, by fax or telephone. You can register in person at either of UW Extension's two offices, located at 4311 11th Ave., NE, Suite 100, or downtown Seattle at 1325 4th Ave at Union, Suite 400 (see Maps to UW Extension Facilities).

What if somebody else (my employer for example) is paying for my courses?
If you have arranged for payment through a third party (your employer), a separate document (signed purchase order or letter of authorization to bill) must accompany your registration form each term. "Third Party Payer" is an acceptable payment option; however, you will be held responsible for tuition and fees if payment is not received.

What fees are paid in addition to tuition?
The following charges and fees may apply and appear on your transaction summary.

  • Application Fee

  • Registration Fee

  • Late Fee: the payment due date is two weeks before the first day of class. Accepted students who do not pay by the close of business the third day of class will be assessed a $90 late fee.

All students enrolled in UW credit classes pay a technology fee based on the number of credits for which they are enrolled each quarter.
    Credits U'grad Fee Grad Fee
    10-18 $41 $41
    9 $37 $41
    8 $33 $41
    7 $29 $41
    6 $25 $35
    5 $21 $29
    4 $17 $23
    3 $13 $17
    0-2 $9 $11
By University policy, all credit classes are assessed a technology fee whether or not technology resources (e.g., computer labs) are used in the course.

  • Technology Fee: all students enrolled in UW credit classes (except those taking credit courses during Summer Quarter or through UW Distance Learning) pay a technology fee based on the number of credits for which they are enrolled each quarter. The technology fee is not specific to UW Extension; rather, it is a fee that applies university-wide to all UW credit courses.

The technology fee was implemented to improve the capacity for student computing and network access. The fee enables students to create a UW computer account and gives students access to the Internet, e-mail, computer and multimedia workstations, laboratories, computer software and dial-up telephone service. All credit classes are assessed a technology fee whether or not technology resources (e.g., computer labs) are used in the course.

  • U-PASS: students enrolled in UW Seattle campus credit courses may purchase a U-PASS through UW Extension for $50 per quarter. You may purchase a U-PASS when registering, but it will not be distributed until the course enrollment is official. The U-PASS sticker must be affixed to a UW ID card.

  • Computer Account Fee: students in noncredit courses can purchase a nonrefundable computer account for $55 per quarter. This fee would allow a student to obtain a UW Husky Card. A Husky Card provides the ability to access a variety of UW services.

I want to withdraw from my course, what do I need to do?
A request to drop or withdraw from a course or certificate program must be submitted in writing to UW Extension Registration Services. Mail, fax or e-mail your request to:

UW Extension
Registration Services
uweoreg@extn.washington.edu
4311 11th Ave NE
Seattle WA 98105
Fax: 206-685-9359
The request must include a signature if sent via mail. E-mail requests are acceptable only if the request comes from your e-mail account listed in our records. If you fail to attend class, or if you only notify the instructor that you wish to drop the class, you have not officially withdrawn from the course.

For credit course, a 0.0 will be entered on your official transcript unless you officially withdraw. You may drop a class without restrictions during the first two weeks of the quarter. These dropped courses will not be recorded on your transcript. A $20 change fee is charged beginning the Monday of the second week of the quarter. For a Noncredit course, an Unsuccessful Completion (USC) will be entered on your official record unless you officially withdraw. For a Noncredit course, an Unsuccessful Completion (USC) will be entered on your official record unless you officially withdraw.

Will I receive a refund when I withdraw?
To receive a 100% refund, minus the $35 non refundable registration fee, you must send a written request to withdraw the day before the first day of class. Email to uweoreg@extn.washington.edu or fax to 206-685-9359. There is no refund for withdrawals on or after the first day of class. For more detailed certificate program refund information, see your certificate program registration form or Transaction Summary, or call 206-897-8939.

I have to enroll in the next class in the program before I'll learn my grade in my current class. What if I do not receive a passing grade and cannot complete the program?
If a student has not successfully completed a course in the previous term and is not eligible to continue in the program, course fees in which the student is currently enrolled can be refunded if requested. This request can be placed after the first day of class. The $50 certificate application fee is not refundable.

Can I receive a tax credit for the tuition I pay for my courses?
For purposes of reporting the new Hope and Lifetime Learning tax credits, federal law (section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code) requires the University to obtain your Social Security Number.

The tax laws allow eligible taxpayers to claim a tax credit of up to $1,000 for UW Extension courses. Under the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC), taxpayers may claim 20 percent of the first $5,000 of qualified tuition and related expenses as a tax credit. (These expenses include any required enrollment fees, but exclude books, room and board, equipment, etc.)

The LLC covers any education expenses paid for academic periods during the tax year. While the tax credit excludes expenses covered by scholarships, tax-free grants, or employer education assistance, it does include all qualified out-of-pocket expenses and those paid by loans.

Taxpayers who earn up to $40,000 ($80,000 for couples filing jointly) in adjusted gross income (AGI) may claim the full tax credit. Above this, the tax credit is gradually phased out; it is eliminated for those making over $50,000 ($100,000 for couples filing jointly). For more detailed information, please refer to IRS Publications 970, "Tax Benefits for Higher Education."

As a Veteran, what benefits are available to me?
Under the G.I. Bill, veterans may be eligible for reimbursement of course fees (text-books not included) when enrolled in select courses offered through UW Extension. Many of the UW Extension certificate programs have been approved for Veterans Administration benefits. Application for such benefits should be made through the Office of Special Services, 520 Schmitz Hall, 206-543-6122.
