Autumn Course

Using UNIX/Linux SystemsClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Oct. 6 - Dec. 8, 2008; $695; 3 CEUs. Instructor: Chris Henry

This course provides a hands-on introduction to UNIX/Linux. Topics:

  • The UNIX/Linux environment
    • fundamentals
    • commands
    • file systems
  • Linux installation
  • Booting and startup
  • Network setup
  • Configuration files; users and groups
  • Scheduling jobs; managing printers
  • X Windows and GNOME / KDE
  • Shell operations
  • Building kernels

Administering UNIX/Linux MachinesClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Jan. 5 - Mar. 23, 2009 (no class on Jan. 19 or Feb. 16); $695; 3 CEUs. Instructor: Angus Glanville

Participants gain knowledge of basic UNIX/Linux administration tasks. Topics:

  • Managing users and groups
  • Scheduling jobs
  • Managing printers
  • Building kernels; managing file systems
  • Name, mail, FTP and web servers
  • Setting up server packages
  • RPMs
  • Perl scripting
  • Installing software packages

Administering Large UNIX/Linux SystemsClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (9 sessions) Mondays, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Apr. 6 - June 15, 2009 (no class on May 25); $695; 3 CEUs. Instructor: Angus Glanville

Participants acquire advanced system administration skills that enable them to administer larger UNIX/Linux networks. Topics:

  • TCP/IP networking
  • Internetworking
  • Security; firewalls (IP Tables)
  • E-mail and sendmail
  • Network File System (NFS)
  • Web servers and proxies
  • Network Information Services (NIS)
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
  • Samba
