Autumn Course

Strategic Perspectives on Technology and ManagementClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (10 sessions) Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m., Sept. 30 - Dec. 9, 2008 (no class Nov. 11); $695; 3.0 CEUs.

Instructor: John Fredericksen

Participants explore the strategic context in which technology-driven organizations operate, gaining an understanding of the influence of investment dynamics and valuation on strategy and management decisions. This course provides an overview of the role of innovation and presents life cycle concepts that shape management and technology strategies. Participants explore the role of alliances in bringing new technologies to market successfully, and are introduced to performance metrics and methodologies. Topics:

  • The importance of the global economy relative to management decisions in the technology sector
  • Innovation and life cycle concepts in technology and management
  • Investment dynamics, valuation and organizational behavior
  • Vision, mission, values and strategy
  • Cross-functional relationships and company performance
  • Fundamentals of management accounting and finance
  • Fundamentals of contracts and intellectual property
  • Time-to-market, and the role of strategic alliances
  • Measuring success

Participants examine the characteristics of successful technology teams and the requirements for effective team leadership. The course provides concepts and techniques for developing and motivating technology teams, working constructively with other organizations, and managing conflict and change. Topics:

  • Development of team member roles and responsibilities
  • Forming high-performance technology teams
  • Team dynamics, values, and motivation
  • Effective communication in leadership and management
  • Decision making in a leadership position
  • Managing internal and external conflict
  • Negotiating at a cross functional level
  • Managing enterprise change
  • Team and individual evaluation

Spring Course

Project ManagementClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (10 sessions) Tuesdays, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Apr. 7 - June 16, 2009 (no class May 26); $695.

Instructor: Steve Markgraf

Focuses on the fundamentals of project management, with an emphasis on practical applications. This course supports research and product or service development programs in any technology in private industry, utilities or governmental agencies. Students work in teams on class exercises, applying course concepts and methods to projects they bring to class from their technology-based work settings. Topics:

  • Understanding the project environment, including paradigm shifts, as well as the corporate strategic environment, tools, and methods
  • Justifying the project or program
  • Defining requirements and developing specifications
  • Developing product (deliverable) and work breakdown structures
  • Constructing dependency network diagrams
  • Estimating duration and resource requirements
  • Building PERT/CPM charts
  • Developing work packages
  • Obtaining, assigning and managing resources
  • Developing milestone schedules and cost profiles
  • Tracking performance
  • Using contractors
  • Closing out projects and programs
