Project managers, executives and managers pursuing internal quality initiatives are now required to have advanced project management skills. Expectations in industry today, particularly in the technology sector, are that engineers, developers, systems analysts, and 6-sigma process managers have project execution and management expertise equivalent to the senior project manager.

Senior project managers are distinguished by the unique positions they occupy within the organization. Generally more experienced with all phases of project planning and implementation, the senior project manager assumes responsibilities over large-scale and multiple projects, leading multi-functional teams, actively collaborating with business development, and providing strategic direction across all project initiatives. Externally, senior project managers often represent the organization's interests and forge critical relationships with a specific target client base. They serve internally as mentors and coaches to young project managers, ensuring communication of contractual obligations throughout all phases.

In this program, students work "shoulder to shoulder" with group leaders and department executives, becoming prime movers of the enterprise-level project management office function. Skills will be acquired to:

  • Develop project organizations in alignment with corporate strategy;
  • Create project office implementation plans;
  • Manage large-scale, complex and multiple projects including advanced risk assessment, change management, performance and control measures, and rapid project health assessments and recovery strategies;
  • Utilize advanced cost and scheduling control techniques for monitoring and controlling multiple projects and enterprise-wide resources;
  • Lead multiple project teams and other project managers and stakeholders, and relate to executives and customers.

Intended participants

  • Graduates of the UW Project Management Certificate Program who wish to take the next step toward improving project management skills and advancing their career;
  • Project managers with more than five years of project management experience who work in a mega project environment or are responsible for implementing multiple parallel projects;
  • Project management office managers, chief project officers, and business process developers and managers overseeing internal quality initiatives that require project management expertise and disciplines;
  • Experienced program and product managers and executives from all industries, organizations and government institutions who oversee a portfolio of projects;
  • Executive managers building a foundation for improved business results and organizational maturity through enterprise project management;
  • Certified Project Management Professionals (PMP) with more than five years of project management experience who wish to fulfill the 60 PDU (Professional Development Units) requirement for re-certification.

The Senior Project Manager Certificate Program has been designed by an advisory board of UW faculty and project management professionals in the Puget Sound region, in collaboration with the local chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). All of our project management courses apply toward professional development units (PDUs) for the Project Management Institute.
