Introduction to Natural Science Illustration
Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 6-Dec. 8, 2008; $663; 3.0 CEUs.
Instructor: Elizabeth Halfacre, artist and educator
The focus of this fundamental course is an understanding of principles related to anatomical, cellular, and physical form and function in rendering illustrations for scientific purposes. Students learn how to render form, using light, line, measure and perspective. Each student is given the opportunity to render selected specimen subjects in a variety of demonstrated techniques.

Zoological Illustration
Schedule: (10 sessions) Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 8-Dec. 10, 2008; $663; 3.0 CEUs.
Instructor: Patricia Weyer, Ph. D., artist and educator
Students begin to develop an understanding of the principles and procedures for a systematic approach to the production of accurate scientific illustrations. The focus is on life histories or metamorphic stages as well as the structural diversity of the shell and exoskeletons found in the animal kingdom. Course fee includes specimen samples.

Vertebrate Illustration

Comparative biomechanics of animal movement is introduced to develop an understanding of the surface anatomy as it relates to the underlying musculoskeletal structures. Rendering styles feature dynamic depictions of both internal and external anatomies. Techniques include both black/white and color.

Wildlife Illustration
Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Jan. 5- March 16, 2009 (No class Jan. 19, Feb. 16), one or more Saturday field trips may replace weeknight sessions; $663; 3 CEUs.
Instructor: Bart Rulon, author, natural science illustrator
An understanding of ecosystems, biomechanics and adaptation provides the scientific underpinning of this course, as students develop field sketches and wildlife drawings. Participants work on sketch journals and reconstruction drawings. A field trip to see birds and wildlife in natural settings is included.

Applied Techniques of Natural Science Illustration
Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., March 30-June 8, 2009 (no class May 25), one or more Saturday field trips may replace weeknight sessions; $663; 3.0 CEUs.
Instructor: Bart Rulon, author, natural science illustrator
Students learn techniques to enhance the presentation of finished work. Use of matting materials, portfolio layout, camera-ready illustration, business considerations, contracts and copyrights are covered as participants develop their final portfolio and work together to prepare a show at a UW gallery highlighting student work.
Botanical Illustration
Schedule: (10 sessions) Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Apr. 1-June 3, 2009, one or more Saturday field trips may replace weeknight sessions; $663; 3.0 CEUs.
Instructor: Louise M. Smith
Participants study the classification and identification of botanical subjects as they explore the field of scientific botanical illustration. They work to improve observation skills and continue to develop skills in drawing, composition, and facility with both pen and ink and watercolor or gouache. Course includes two scheduled Saturday field trips to the UW Greenhouse and Washington Park, Anacortes.
