During this program, students will meet on Monday evenings and two Saturdays to write about their lives and learn techniques that can aid them as they transform their experiences into a dynamic personal memoir.

The Memoir (Six-month format) certificate program explores the many literary facets of memory. Memoir is not fiction, yet it uses several techniques typical to fiction—for example, dialogue, description, close-ups, and stream-of-consciousness. It certainly involves looking back, but is more than a retrospective. The subject for the memoir can be its author, such as in My Life as a Dog or The Liar's Club; the subject can be someone famous like A.E. Hotchner's Papa Hemingway, or someone unknown like Frank McCourt's mother—the Angela of Angela's Ashes. Memoir can also hone in on a mere slice of life, like Lauren Slater's Lying. Students will have an opportunity to explore all these techniques, and more, in this six-month program.
