Medical Engineering Courses

The four certificate programs below can be taken independently or combined with departmental seminars for a master's degree. For the master's degree, students may pursue either a thesis research option or a non-thesis option. The Basic Medical Sciences Certificate Program and the Medical Devices & Commercialization Certificate Program are offered every year. The other two certificates are offered on a rotating basis.

Basic Medical Sciences

18 credits; Thursday evenings, Bellevue; Seattle lab on Saturdays; offered yearly; begins autumn 2008.

• Medical Device Design

12 credits; Wednesday evenings, Bellevue; begins autumn 2008.

• Medical Chemistry
  
• Biosensors
  
• Biomaterials and Biocompatibility

12 credits; Online with some class meetings on UW campus on Monday evenings; begins autumn 2009.

• Medical Imaging Diagnostics
  
• Clinical Diagnostics
  
• Introduction to Epidemiology

(Prior completion of Basic Medical Sciences required)

12 credits; Tuesday evenings, Bellevue; begins autumn 2008.

Master of Medical Engineering Evening Degree Program

Includes all four certificate programs above plus Bioengineering Department seminars and the option of a master's thesis

Note: An important feature of the Master of Medical Engineering is an optional thesis. Applicants declare their intention to follow the thesis or non-thesis option at the time of application to the degree program. In addition to the four certificates, thesis students undertake nine credits of thesis research and two one-credit Bioengineering Departmental Seminars (total 65 credits). Non-thesis students take four one-credit Bioengineering Departmental Seminars and the certificates(total 58 credits).

Courses are available on an individual basis to professionals in biomedical and biotechnology fields who do not intend to pursue the certificate(s) or master's degree. See each individual certificate program for details and prerequisites.
