Barbara Endicott-Popovsky
Associate Director, Center of Information Assurance and Cybersecurity
As Associate Director for the CIAC, Endicott-Popovsky has a joint faculty appointment with the Information School and the Computer Science Department at the University of Washington at Tacoma. Her research interests include forensic-ready networks and integrating secure coding practices. She has extensive experience leading IT projects and managing the organizational development issues arising from new IT structures and programs. Endicott-Popovsky's 20-year career in industry includes executive positions creating and managing strategic IT plans, projects, and architecture standards. She has an MS in Information Systems Engineering, an MBA and a Ph.D. in computer science.
Bob Freitag
Director, Institute for Hazards Mitigation Planning and Research
Freitag is the Executive Director of the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup (CREW) as well as the Director of the Institute for Hazards Mitigation. Before coming to the University, Freitag worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and was employed by several private architectural and engineering firms in Hawaii and Australia. He also taught science as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines. Freitag received his Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Washington.
John Labadie
Senior Environmental Analyst, Seattle Public Utilities
Labadie has extensive experience in the management of hazardous materials and emergency preparedness planning for federal agencies, state and local governments and industrial facilities. He has developed comprehensive emergency management plans for newly-incorporated cities in Washington as well as for the Washington State Department of Health and Emergency Response Plans. In addition to emergency management, recent professional projects includes the development of a comprehensive hazard mitigation plan for the city of Renton, Washington, and conducting Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training courses for environmental remediation companies, landfill operators, and industrial corporations. Labadie also provided support for the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Department of Energy facilities.
John Kobayashi
Clinical Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, School of Public Health
Kobayashi is a Clinical Associate Professor at the UW Northwest Center for Public Health Practice and the Center for Public Health Informatics. From 1982 to 2001, he was the State Epidemiologist for Communicable Diseases at the Washington State Department of Health, where he directed large multi-state foodborne outbreak investigations, and trained over 25 Epidemic Intelligence Service Officers from the Centers for Disease Control. Since 2001, he has been the foreign advisor for the Field Epidemiology Training Program at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Tokyo, Japan. He spends alternate months in Seattle and Tokyo, providing support to the Seattle and Tokyo programs, both on site and remotely.
Edward McCormack
Senior Research Engineer, Washington State Transportation Center (TRAC)
McCormack currently manages Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) freight mobility and border projects for the Washington State Department of Transportation's Advanced Technology Branch. These projects include developing transponder-based systems to replace paperwork at border crossings for trucks and testing the use of electronic door seals to secure marine containers for the U.S. Department of Transportation. As part of these efforts, he has partnered with a number of organizations including the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Maersk/Sealand, and American President Lines. McCormack teaches a graduate freight transportation course for the University of Washington's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He received his master's degree in Civil Engineering and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Washington.
