Program at a glance >>

Business Administration (winter/spring) is ONE course taught over two quarters. Students must successfully complete Winter and Spring Quarters to earn 15 ADMIN 510 credits and a certificate. No partial credit is awarded. Successful completion includes a business plan.
The Winter/Spring section begins in January. This program does not meet INS regulations for students on F-1 student visas.

Matriculated undergraduate students are not eligible for this program. For other course options, please see your adviser.

Do you need to sharpen your understanding of business fundamentals? Are you seeking to move into management or are you seeking to improve productivity and sales in your business? Are you a graduate student in engineering or the sciences who expects to have team management responsibilities and would like a graduate credit program to complement your masters or Ph.D. degree? Or are you an entrepreneur looking for a program that will prepare you to create a great business plan and secure funding?

No matter your situation, this program will increase your understanding of business basics and help you reach your goals. This 15 graduate credit certificate program is composed of a single integrated course - the Essentials of Business - ADMIN 510 and meets two nights per week for two quarters.

Program participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of core concepts of business that is essential to new ventures and existing organizations alike. Program participants will also fine-tune leadership skills by developing and presenting a comprehensive business plan for a new venture or existing business unit, while you earn a University of Washington Certificate in Business Administration (CBA).

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Conduct a strategic business analysis;
  • Develop corporate mission, vision and value statements;
  • Complete a market feasibility analysis and develop a marketing plan;
  • Evaluate a company's financial position, including its cash flow, credit position and liquidity;
  • Access and evaluate human resource issues;
  • Interpret and analyze business financial statements;
  • Determine an appropriate legal structure for a new venture;
  • Have an understanding of basic business law;

  • International students who want an overview of American business practices;
  • Health care professionals (physicians, nurses, dental hygienists, dentists, veterinarians, administrators) who wish additional training in business operations;
  • Prospective or practicing entrepreneurs who want to develop or refine their business analysis and planning skills;
