About UW
Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is the oldest state-assisted institution of higher education in the Pacific Northwest. From its original wooded wilderness site, the beautiful campus has grown to comprise more than 700 acres of trees, landscape and buildings between the shores of Lake Washington and Lake Union, a few miles from downtown Seattle. Nearly 35,000 students attend the University of Washington, served by 2,700 full-time teaching faculty members.

The university is committed to having a diverse student body, and actively recruits and encourages the enrollment of underrepresented students.
