Learn the organizational patterns and language structures used in academic writing!
English for Academic Writing (ELAP 170) is the fourth course course in the English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP) series. In this series, you study the grammar and vocabulary necessary for academic work in English. The other three courses in the series are:

Topics in this course include summarizing, defining, comparing, commenting on data, describing causal relationships and processes, and proposing solutions. Concepts learned in this course are applicable to longer pieces of academic writing.

This course is an intensive, interactive online course with

  • interactive skill-building exercises
  • short assignments to be sent via e-mail
  • individualized and detailed help from a University of Washington instructor
This course is designed for non-native speakers of English, but also may be taken by native speakers who are weak in grammar. Students in our courses have different reasons for improving their English:

  • for written communication in their profession
  • to prepare for study at any university where English is the medium of instruction
  • to prepare for such standardized exams as the TOEFL or the University of Washington AEP Diagnostic Examination, required of all students who have English language proficiency scores below the University of Washington standard
  • to reach their personal goals
Anyone may take this course, and it is accessible from anywhere in the world.
