Self-Placement Test
Make sure that ELAP 150 is the best course for you. The suggested level is 5, based on levels from the University of Washington Online English Language Self-Placement Test (UWOELST). This is a timed 10-minute test. Don't worry if you cannot complete all of it. Do your best. Answer as many questions as you can. When you are ready, go to the test... »

You will receive a score and an immediate level placement. You should then preview the course (Sample ELAP 150 Lessons) to make sure that the suggested level of English is appropriate. You may take courses at a higher level than your test score, but keep in mind that this may make it more difficult for you to complete the course.

Will You Be a Successful Online Learner?
To help you decide if online learning is right for you, ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do you like to learn on your own?

  • Do you manage your time well?

  • Are you comfortable using the Internet and e-mail?

  • Is typing easy for you?

  • Can you spend 9 -10 weeks studying online?

  • Do you like to communicate in writing?

  • Can you learn without classroom discussion?

  • Can you learn without face-to-face interaction with a teacher and classmates?

  • Do you learn better from reading than listening in a classroom?

  • Do you have regular access to a computer with a modem?
If you answered "yes" to most of these questions, online learning is probably suitable for you. If you answered "no" to most of these questions, online distance learning may not be right for you.
