Learn to control your sentence-level English grammar and vocabulary in academic contexts!
Beginning Academic English (ELAP 140) is the first course in the English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP) series. In this series, you study the grammar and vocabulary necessary for academic work in English. You will begin building up your ability to recognize correct language structures and progressively work on producing more and more complex grammar. The next three courses in the series are:
This course is an intensive, interactive online course with
- interactive skill-building exercises
- short assignments to be sent via e-mail
- individualized and detailed help from a University of Washington instructor
This course is designed for non-native speakers of English, but also may be taken by native speakers who are weak in grammar. Students in our courses have different reasons for improving their English:
- for written communication in their profession
- to prepare for study at any university where English is the medium of instruction
- to prepare for such standardized exams as the TOEFL or the University of Washington AEP Diagnostic Examination, required of all students who have English language proficiency scores below the University of Washington standard
- to reach their personal goals
