Housing
You are responsible for securing your own housing and transportation in Seattle. You may stay with a host family, in shared housing, in an apartment, or with friends or relatives. On a space available basis, you can obtain accommodation in the UW dormitories, where you also have a choice of meal options in the dining program. In Autumn Quarter, the UW Dormitories are not available. For more information, please visit the Housing page.

Medical Insurance
Health care in the US is very expensive. Therefore, on a J-1 Visa, you must have medical insurance during your internship at the University of Washington (UW). You may purchase medical insurance in your home country before departure, or you may purchase UWEO's Lewer/Mark Plus Copay coverage soon after your arrival on campus.

For more information, see University of Washington Requirements and UWEO's Lewer/Mark Plus Copay coverage »

Facilities on the Main UW Campus
As a visiting Intern, you can use the excellent libraries on the main UW campus to borrow books, conduct research, and use computers to check e-mail and search the web.

Orientation to the UW and Immigration Check-In
You must attend the VISIT Program Orientation. Bring your DS-2019, passport, Statement of Compliance with the Insurance Requirements, and Seattle-area residence address to the orientation.

U-Pass (Bus Pass)
You can buy a low-cost bus pass. You can ride the buses in and around Seattle, ride the University of Washington Night Shuttle, and get discounts in many local businesses.

No Smoking Policy
Smoking is prohibited in all university facilities, including those in Downtown Seattle. Please read and adhere to the smoking policies of the University of Washington and the City of Seattle.
