How to Apply

Requirements
To apply for a VISIT internship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are enrolled in and pursuing a degree at an accredited postsecondary academic institution outside the United States.
  • You are primarily in the United States to engage in a student internship program rather than to engage in employment or provide services.
  • You are in good academic standing at your home institution.
  • You intend to return to your home institution after completion of the internship in order to finish your degree.
  • You have a level of English language proficiency sufficient to perform successfully in the internship environment.
  • You have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and any accompanying dependents for the duration of your visit to the United States.
  • You have not participated in a student internship program for more than twelve months for each degree/major.

Admission to the VISIT Program

Follow these steps for admission to the program, allowing at least three months to complete the process, including your visa interview:
  1. Contact the UW academic department or program where you would like to conduct research or work-based learning as an Intern. The department should match the area of specialization in your degree program. (Note: Individuals who wish to enroll in coursework at UW should not apply for an internship but instead contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office or the Graduate Admissions Office for information about educational opportunities.)

  2. If you and the department agree to the general goals of the internship, you will be interviewed by phone or in person, or you will need to provide proof that your English proficiency is sufficient for the proposed activity. For example, you may need to show evidence of your standardized English test score, such as 580 (paper-based TOEFL), 90 (iBT), or 7 (IELTS).

  3. The host department completes Part A of the Intern Application Form and sends it to you to complete Parts C-F, and your home institution to complete Part G.

  4. Return the Intern Application Form to the academic department along with a copy of your passport ID page, financial documentation, and a copy of your CV or resume.

  5. The academic department fills out a Training/Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) and forwards it to you.

  6. Sign the DS-7002 and return it to the department.

  7. The department completes the University of Washington Visa Request Form 1025-J VISIT and notifies UW Educational Outreach International & English Language Programs (IELP) of your selection for participation in the University of Washington Visiting International Student Internship and Training Program. IELP administers the VISIT program on behalf of the University of Washington.

  8. IELP forwards to you the Training/Internship Placement Plan, a Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status- Form DS-2019 (prepared by the UW International Scholars Office), and the Statement of Compliance with the Insurance Requirements.

  9. You present the DS-7002 and DS-2019 forms to the US consulate when applying for a J-1 visa. Accompanying family members should apply for J-2 visas at the same time.
