How to Apply
Requirements Admission » Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions about AAPS Admissions
Q: I am already attending graduate school in the US. Do I have to take the course before starting graduate school? A: While the program is most useful to students who are about to begin their first American graduate study experience, students with previous graduate study experience in the US, such as visiting or post-doctorate scholars, have also benefitted from this type of program. Q: Can I apply for AAPS before I decide which school to attend? A: We strongly encourage you to send your AAPS application early. If you have not decided which university to attend at the time of submitting your application to our program, please include a statement listing the universities and departments you are considering. Q: I am attending a very specialized graduate program. How can I find out if the AAPS curriculum will be relevant to my area of study? A:Our instructors have a broad range of experience working with graduate students from many disciplines. In most cases, instructors can customize assignments to fit students' specific learning objectives. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the scope of our curriculum. Q: I already have an I-20 from my Graduate School. Do I need an I-20 from the University of Washington, International & English Language Programs? A:As an AAPS student, you are required to have an AAPS I-20 from UW's International & English Language Programs if you plan to study on an F-1 Visa. When attending the AAPS program, it is necessary that you apply for your F-1 Visa and enter the US using only the AAPS I-20. Once you arrive in Seattle, your Graduate School can process a transfer I-20 for you. Please email the AAPS Program Manager at AAPS@extn.washington.edu with further questions regarding your I-20 or student visa needs. Q: I've been issued a J-1 Visa. Do I still need an I-20 from the University of Washington, International & English Language Programs? A: When traveling on a J-1 (Visiting Scholar) or J-2 (Dependent of a Visiting Scholar) Visa, you do not need an I-20 from the University of Washington International & English Language Programs. Please help our registration staff by indicating on your application that you will be studying on a J-1 Visa. Q: What materials are provided and what do I need to bring? A: For the 2010 program, AAPS will provide each student with a coursepack that includes reading assignments for the lecture series, writing guidelines and presentation tips. Students will also receive Keys for Writers by Ann Raimes, a writing handbook that will be useful during and after AAPS. While it is not required, many students found it useful to have a personal computer/laptop to work on their research paper and presentations out of class. |
