Residence Hall Frequently Asked Questions
Below are many questions that our students have asked about staying in UW residence halls during their program.
Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters
Q: How do I pay for my residence hall room? A: You may send the full amount with your deposit or separately before you arrive. Another choice is to pay the remaining amount at the front desk when you check in. You can pay by credit card (American Express, Visa or Mastercard), cash, US-affiliated bank check, money order (in exact amount made out to the University of Washington) or traveler's checks. Q: What should I do if I arrive before the check in date? A: You will be responsible for arranging your own housing prior to the check-in date. A: You are responsible for cleaning your own room and washing your own towels and linens. However, the bathrooms and other shared facilities will be cleaned regularly by custodial staff. Q: Is there parking available? A: Yes. But parking on or near campus is very limited and can be expensive. Q: If I attend one of the programs in the Downtown Seattle campus, can I stay in a residence hall on the UW campus? A: Yes, there are buses that leave frequently to downtown from the residence halls. Q: What residence hall will I be staying in? A: You will be staying in a residence hall located on upper campus, about a 5-minute walk from the center of main campus. You can find it on the campus map in your acceptance packet, or you can look at the online campus map. Q: Where will I check in to the residence hall? A: You will check in at the residence hall indicated on the housing confirmation you will receive from UW Conference Services. To locate the hall, look on the campus map in your acceptance packet, or look at the online campus map. McMahon Hall's front desk is open 24 hours, every day. A: Extra days are included in your residence hall package in order to provide you with time to arrive and settle in a day or two before your program begins. A: The residence hall rooms are equipped with towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, beds, closets, drawers, desks, a phone and a phone line. Refrigerators may be rented for your entire stay. You will need to bring your own personal belongings and toiletries. Q: Can my spouse/partner be my roommate? A: Yes. Please note your spouse as your Roommate Request on the Reservation Form. Your spouse will also need to fill out his/her own Reservation Form and Contract, and send both forms and a deposit to Conference Services. Your spouse does not need to be enrolled in one of our programs to be your roommate. Q: Will someone be cleaning my room? Q: How does my Conference Card work? A: The Conference Card functions as building access and like a debit card at UW dining facilities. Each time you purchase a meal, the amount will be subtracted from your Conference Card. Q: Where can I use my Conference Card? A: You can use your Conference Card in any of the Housing Food Services campus dining halls, cafes and convenience stores. The front desk in your residence hall can provide you with more information about these places. Q: Where can I do laundry? A: There are laundry facilities in the residence halls. At the desk, you can purchase a laundry card. The cost of one wash and one dry is $1.30 (this is subject to change). Q: Is there parking available? A: Yes. But parking on or near campus is very limited and can be expensive. Q: What is the closest store? A: Ian's Domain is a convenience store located in the basement of McCarty Hall. Other stores can also be found in the University District. |
