Practice conversational English with a fluent English speaker. This friendship will be a great way to learn about American culture, too.

We will match you with someone who wants to learn your language and about your culture.

You should meet with your conversation partner at least once a week during the quarter. After that time, you and your partner might want to continue to meet, or you can have a new conversation partner.

Note: This program is available only to students currently enrolled in International Outreach and English Language Programs.

• Once you receive your partner's name and phone number by e-mail or regular mail, contact the person and arrange a meeting time.
• Meet once or twice a week, depending on your schedules. You should spend half of the time speaking in English, and the other half, in the international student’s language. (If you are not studying the international student’s language, then you may speak English the whole time.)
• Contact us to report any problems or changes. Do not feel you have to continue if problems remain or can't be solved. (One example of a problem is a student who continually misses his/her appointment time or seems too busy.) Just let us know. We can match you with another person.
• Let us know of any changes in address or phone number. Contact us if you would like another partner or take part in another program.
• We strongly recommend that the volunteer and international student participate in FIUTS quarterly activities. This is a good chance to meet and interact with students socially.
