Admission
I am an international transfer student with 75 credits completed within the United States
What are the general University of Washington admission requirements I need to complete?
1. Core Subject Requirements
The six core subject requirements are generally completed at the secondary school level. For students who do not meet all of the requirements through secondary school coursework, college-level courses will also be considered. One quarter or semester at the college level will count as one year of the secondary school requirement.
- Composition/Literature. Four years of composition/literature are required. Depending on the educational system(s) the applicant has been enrolled in and the applicant's academic history, the Office of Admissions may consider any of the following to satisfy the requirement: English composition/literature courses studied in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, or the U.S., or taken at an international school where English is the language of instruction; Composition/literature courses in the student's native language; College-level English coursework completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, and the U.S.; or a maximum of one year of public speaking, debate, journalistic writing, or business English.
- Mathematics. Three years of study are required, at least at the level of algebra, geometry, and second-year algebra. An algebra course completed in the last year of junior high school may satisfy the requirement if second-year algebra is completed in secondary school. Arithmetic, pre-algebra, business math, and statistics courses will not count towards the requirement.
- Social Studies. Three years of study are required in history or any of the social sciences, e.g., anthropology, contemporary world problems, economics, geography, political science, psychology, or sociology. Credit for religion courses, consumer economics, student government, or community service will not count towards the requirement.
- Foreign Language. Two years of study in the same language are required. The foreign language requirement will be considered satisfied for applicants who complete their education through the 7th grade in school(s) where a) English was not the language of instruction and b) in countries other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, and the U.S. International applicants who entered the U.S. educational system before the 8th grade must satisfy the foreign language requirement.
2. English Proficiency
All applicants must submit exam scores to demonstrate basic English language proficiency. Exception: Only those applicants whose country of origin is Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom will be presumed to be proficient and will not be required to submit scores. Students who were born in a native English-speaking country but were educated in a non-native English speaking country will, however, be required to satisfy the English proficiency requirement for admission consideration.
To demonstrate proficiency, applicants must submit official results from one of the following tests:
- Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL): 207 computer-based or 540 paper-based
- UW-administered Michigan Language Test (MLT): 85
- Advanced Placement International English Language: AP4
- IELTS: 7
All exam results must be official and sent directly from the testing agency, except the UW-administered MLT, which will be reported directly to the Office of Admissions. No other exams may be used to satisfy the proficiency requirement. Previous ESL or English composition courses, even when taken in the United States, will not satisfy the English proficiency requirement for admission. Students enrolled at U.S. colleges are required to submit official exam results to fulfill the proficiency requirement.
Further Academic English Coursework at the UW for Graduation
Students who score high enough to be considered for admission but not as high as the scores listed below are required to take a sequence of one to five remedial courses in the Academic English Program (AEP), beginning with their first quarter at the UW. Students who have been admitted to the UW will be required to register for AEP courses unless they submit exam scores high enough to place them out of the requirement prior to registering for regular classes at the UW.
- TOEFL: 237 computer-based or 580 paper-based
- UW-administered MLT: 90
- APIEL: AP4
- IELTS: 8
A diagnostic exam is available to determine the appropriate level at which to start AEP course work within the sequence. Students who do not take the diagnostic exam will be required to register for the first level in the series of AEP courses. An extra fee is charged for each AEP course in addition to regular tuition; that extra fee is currently $828 per course. At least one AEP course will be required each quarter until all mandatory AEP classes are satisfactorily completed. Students required to take AEP must first register for AEP to be eligible to register for their other classes.
