ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Developed in 2002 by an interdisciplinary team from the departments of Construction Management and Civil & Environmental Engineering, the University of Washington's Graduate Program in Construction Engineering prepares professionals to deal with the changes in the heavy construction industry. Advances in materials and processes – combined with new management practices, legal issues and environmental concerns – and the growing number of major infrastructure efforts such as roads, bridges and ports that have broad societal impact, require professionals who are armed with the appropriate knowledge and skills.
Earn while you learn
The University of Washington Graduate Program in Construction Engineering is the only completely online master's program in the country focusing on the heavy construction field. The online format allows you to earn your master's degree without leaving your current position or ever setting foot on campus. This convenience and the relevancy of course topics to the industry allow you immediately to apply what you've learned in class in a real-world setting.

| The Department of Construction Management at the University of Washington has served the construction industry since 1964, offering preparation for individuals seeking entry-level technical and management positions in the construction industry. The interdisciplinary curriculum contains a mix of technical, managerial and business courses, providing essential skills for success in the construction industry.
The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, ranked 16th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, offers on-campus coursework and graduate programs in virtually all civil and environmental engineering subdisciplines, including construction engineering, environmental engineering and science, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics systems, structural engineering, transportation engineering and water resources.

Benefit from two perspectives
The multidisciplinary curriculum is another unique quality of this program. Courses in the program combine engineering principles with management techniques and cover a range of topics, including marine construction, estimating, utility construction, construction law, pavement construction, environmental regulations, cost analysis, and more. Courses are taught by the same UW faculty who teach construction management and civil engineering courses on campus. Professionals in the field also serve as instructors.
You set the schedule
Start earning your master's degree any quarter. Applications are accepted four times a year. While courses follow the academic quarter schedule and there are due dates for exams and assignments, how you use your time to meet those deadlines is up to you. In addition, the time it takes to complete the degree depends on the number of courses you take each quarter. See Earning the Degree for more information.

In addition to what you learn from your instructors and course materials, online discussion, e-mail and voice mail enable you to learn from fellow students. Construction Engineering students exhibit a strong desire to learn and to enhance their skills to improve their job performance. Students come from a variety of backgrounds, including construction companies, contractors, consulting firms, public agencies and the military, and bring with them years of industry experience.
Choose the degree that's right for you
Upon completion of the Graduate Program in Construction Engineering, you will earn either an M.S. in Civil Engineering or an M.S. in Construction Management. Which degree you earn depends on the department to which you apply. If your undergraduate degree is in engineering, you should apply to the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering to earn the M.S. in Civil Engineering. If your educational background is in a field other than engineering, you should apply to the Department of Construction Management to earn the M.S. in Construction Management.
Regardless of which department you apply to, the curriculum and degree requirements are the same.
Take a test drive
If you are unsure if you ultimately want to pursue a master's degree, you have the option of first enrolling in one of two graduate-level certificate programs or a single course. Please be advised that if you wish to later apply these credits toward a master's degree you must obtain graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) status before enrolling in your first course.
