Course Placement
Students who have not met the UW English Language Proficiency Requirement are placed into Academic English Program (AEP) courses according to test scores from TOEFL iBT, IELTS, SAT, or ACT. The average of the reading and writing scores is used for placement into the academic reading/writing courses (ENGL 102-103). The average of the listening and speaking scores is used to determine if the academic listening speaking course (ENGL 104) is required. Students with SAT and/or ACT scores who have not yet met the English Language Proficiency Requirement must also demonstrate academic English listening proficiency by passing the AEP listening placement test. Students may challenge their placement or try to satisfy the English language proficiency requirement by re-taking any of these tests or by taking the AEP placement test. If multiple scores are presented, the highest scores are used.
