StarNet is an education program that involves high school students and teachers in doing authentic research in genetics and considering related issues in bioethics. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, StarNet developed a curriculum, "Investigating the Effects of Genes and Environment on Smoking Behavior" that engages high school students as scientists in designing and implementing a research investigation of the effects of genes and environment on smoking behavior.  One of the curriculum units leads students to consider bioethical issues related to research on complex traits like smoking.</p>

From 2005-2009, StarNet provided teacher professional development to support implementation in high school science classrooms, as well as equipment and supply kits for genotyping research subject DNA in classrooms. Although these portions of the project have been completed, the project curriculum and a related curriculum called "Exploring Databases" are available for download on the project website.
